LONDON, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh produced the first shock of this year's Cricket World Cup by easily beating heavyweights South Africa by 21 runs on Sunday.

Coming off the back of another loss to hosts and number one ranked side, England, the pressure was on the Proteas to register their first win of the tournament, however Bangladesh had other ideas.

A superb 75 off 84 from Bangladeshi talisman Shakib Al Hasan and another brilliant 78 off 80 by wicket keeper Mushfiqur Rahim gave the underdogs a superb platform for the lower order batsman Mahmudullah to score a rapid 46 from 33 balls.

The flurry of runs at the start of the innings and at the end meant that Bangladesh finished their innings on 330.

South Africa came in to bat in the second inning knowing they would need to improve on their last batting performance against England. Despite a brisk 62 off 53 by captain Faf du Plessis, South Africa failed to chase down another total, finishing on 309 for 8, 21 runs behind Bangladesh.

South Africa now go on to face India knowing only a win against the world's number two ranked side will be enough for them to salvage their World Cup.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, will be hoping to carry their form into their next game against New Zealand who themselves have just come off the back of a convincing 10 wicket win against Sri Lanka.
