SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- At least six militants and a trooper were killed Sunday in a predawn fierce gunfight in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight erupted early Sunday at village Kapran-Batagund of Shopian district, about 65 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"In a predawn gunfight today here, six militants were killed in a stand-off with joint contingents of police and army," a senior police official posted in Shopian told Xinhua. "An Indian army trooper was also killed fighting these militants."

According to police the gunfight broke out after government forces cordoned off the area on specific intelligence information suggesting presence of militants.

"No sooner the joint contingents reached near the suspected area, the militants present inside a house fired upon them, thereby triggering a gunfight," the police said.

The identity of slain militants was being ascertained, police said.

This is a second major gunfight in the past three days. On Friday six militants were killed at Sutkipora of Bijbehara in Anantnag district.
