NEW YORK, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Tuesday that China is committed to developing long-term, healthy and stable relations with the United States.

Meeting with Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger here, Wang said that China aims to achieve a bilateral relationship featuring "non-conflict, non-confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation" between the two countries.

There can be competitions between China and the United States, but both sides should not view each other with a Cold War mentality and should avoid falling into the trap of zero-sum game, Wang said.

"Recently, some forces in the United States frequently discredited China, creating hostile sentiments and causing serious damage to the China-U.S. relations," Wang said.

"If left unchecked, it will lead China-U.S. relations astray. It's against the common interests of both countries as well as the international community," he warned.

The top Chinese diplomat expressed his hope that China and the United States will "step towards each other" by improve mutual understanding and preventing the spread of negative momentum so as to ensure the development of bilateral relations on the right track.

Appreciating Kissinger's efforts on the development of China-U.S. relations, Wang said he hopes Kissinger will continue to exert his unique influence and make more contributions to China-U.S. ties.

Kissinger said he is optimistic about the long-term development of U.S.-China relationship, calling on the two sides to view bilateral relations from a broader perspective and enhance cooperation on international and regional issues, and global challenges.

He said a few hostile comments in the United States are not mainstream views, adding that despite he differences on some issues, the two sides should not confront each other, which is not in the interest of either party.

Cooperation is the only correct choice for the United States and China, Kissinger said, voice his willingness to continue to work for this goal.
