NEW YORK, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- The 19-year-old Marketa Vondrousova from Czech Republic stunned No. 13 seed Kiki Bertens from Netherlands, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 7-6 (1) here on Saturday, making her first Grand Slam women's singles round of 16 at the U.S. Open 2018.

Bertens, one of the darkhorse contenders after upsetting four Top 10 players to win Cincinnati two weeks ago, was facing her third lefty in a row at the U.S. Open.

Bertens cruised out to a 5-3 lead in the first set before Vondrousova hit a hot streak and barely missed a ball. Berten's frustration showed before the tiebreak as she smacked a ball into the net, and she double-faulted twice to help Vondrousova race to a 5-0 lead that held up.

Vondrousova looked strong going up 2-0 in the second set, but then collapsed and won only three points in the next seven games.

Bertens ran off seven games and seemed in control after going up a break in the third set. Vondrousova looked tired by the time she trailed 2-4, but she didn't stop fighting. The third set also went to a tiebreak. At 2-1, Vondrousova never trailed again and pushed her way into the fourth round.

Vondrousova is the only teenager left in the women's singles draw. Enditem
