DUBAI, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Wednesday welcomed the call by Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani to initiate a cease-fire during the Eid al-Adha, or the Islamic "Festival of Sacrifice," UAE state news agency WAM reported.

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the initiative is part of the Afghan government's efforts to build the confidence necessary in creating a positive atmosphere, supporting political endeavors, and enhancing the chances of security, stability and peace in Afghanistan.

"Preventing the bloodshed of Afghan citizens during these virtuous days is a favorable call by the Afghan government to end fighting in the country," the ministry said in a statement.

The UAE "is committed, via its historical ties with the country, to attaining stability and prosperity for Afghanistan and its people," it added.

Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Sunday announced a conditional three-month cease-fire with the Taliban which started on Monday.
