MOSCOW, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Police in the Russian Republic of Chechnya in the North Caucasus on Monday foiled several attempts to commit "high-profile crimes," local authorities said.

The attempts aimed at disrupting the Eid al-Adha, one of the most important holidays in the predominantly Muslim republic, head of the Chechnya Republic CheRamzan Kadyrov wrote on Telegram.

The perpetrators of the attacks in the capital city of Grozny and the city of Shali were neutralized, he said, adding that one of them, who attempted to blow himself up but survived the explosion, was taken to a local hospital.

Several policemen were injured in both cities he said, without providing further details.

The Russian Investigative Committee said in a statement that on Monday morning two unknown attackers tried to break into the building of the Shali District Interior Ministry's headquarters and wounded two police officers with knives.

Meanwhile, a young man with a backpack approached a police post in the village of Mesker-Yurt north of Shali and attempted to blow himself up.

No police officers or civilians were injured in the explosion, the statement said.

Police have neutralized all the assailants, the statement said.

After the attacks the situation in Chechnya returned to calm, Kadyrov said.
