NEW DELHI, April 9 (Xinhua) -- At least six people have been killed and 12 others injured in two road accidents in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu Monday, police said.

The accidents occurred in the state's Dindigul and Erode districts.

"In Dindigul, four people were killed and two others injured when their car collided with a speeding bus. Those injured have been admitted to a local hospital," a police official said.

Eye-witnesses told cops that the bus was travelling at high speed and the collision took place after its driver lost control.

"A probe has been ordered into the incident and a manhunt launched to track down the bus driver who fled the spot leaving the vehicle behind," he added.

In Erode, two persons were killed and 10 others injured in a head-on collision between a van and a truck, which were coming from the opposite direction.

"The victims were occupants of both the vehicles. The injured have been hospitalized, where the condition of some are said to be serious," a police official said.

"A probe has been ordered into the incident. We will question the truck driver once he is out of hospital after recovering from injuries," he added.

India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
